Focus is set in a large city in the United States in the present day. One evening, a seductive young woman lures a middle-aged man into a hotel room to scam him for money, only to discover that he is a master con artist. Feeling some affection and pity for the newcomer named Jess (Margot Robbie), the "con artist extraordinaire" Nicky (Will Smith) decides to take her under his wing, teaching her the tricks of the trade to pickpocket wealthy people for a living. In no time, the clever girl becomes excellent at it but still remains grateful to her mentor, even developing feelings for him. Eventually, Nicky also falls in love with Jess. They spend the night together, go on a honeymoon trip... However, fearing that two con artists cannot trust each other, they part ways. Three years later, the two unexpectedly cross paths again...
